An elegant Brunello dedicated to the memory of the founder, Cosimo Loia, who strongly believed in the potential of the vineyards in Montalcino. The grapes for this wine are harvested from the first vineyard planted by Cosimo in 1985.

Tasting Notes

Notes of medicinal herbs, red roses, spices and small red ripe fruits. The palate is refined and elegant. A powerful and concentrated wine with great minerality and acidity.

An exceptional wine that is perfect for special occasions. Try with steak, braised meats or aged cheeses.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Cosimo impresses with a remarkably fresh bouquet of bright cherry and exotic spice complemented by hints of mint and sweet smoke. It's rich and silky in feel, yet energized by a balanced burst of volatility, with a vivid mix of red plums and cloves underscored by saline-minerals and grippy tannins that mount toward the close. This finishes structured with drying tannins that clench the palate, leaving nuances of sour cherry and balsam herbs to linger on. This rendition of Cosimo will take some time to fully express itself, making it a rare bird amongst the majority of 2018 Brunellos Vinous October 2022

Intense currants, black walnuts and some sweet spices with a savory undertone on the nose, that follow through to a very tight palate packed with firm, comfortably chewy tannins. Powerful, austere and long. Needs at least two to three years in the bottle. James Suckling April 2023

The nose presents a luxurious swirl of black cherries and blackberries with dark chocolate while the palate remains slightly more austere with the astringent snap of cherry skin, bitter cocoa, bergamot zest and a spicy, warmth that carries through a long finish. Wine Enthusiast October 2023

Tech Details

Produced with a selection of grapes from the estate's highest and richest vineyard in marl. The vineyards are located on the South-East facing side of Montalcino, overlooking Val d'Orcia. Protected from the sea breezes coming in from the west. This well-ventilated area guarantees an optimal microclimate, without humidity stagnation and wetness during the growing season and natural protection from the main vine diseases (botrytis and downy mildew).

  • Harvest: The grapes are hand picked during the first and second weeks of October.
  • Weather: Seasonal weather. March was characterized by average rainfall and temperatures. Rainy April during the opening of the buds. Flowering in May had average weather and the rainfall was concentrated in the middle of the month. The plants revealed excellent vegetative health.
  • Soil: Dry & stony. The soil is mostly composed of "galestro" pure marl, small areas of limestone and sand with layers of skeleton and rocks.
  • Fermentation: In concrete tanks, spontaneous fermentation without adding yeasts, maceration for 24 days with delicate pumping over, all takes place at controlled temperatures between 80-82°F.
  • Barrels: Slavonian oak of different capacity 5hl - 10hl
  • Aging: 40 months in Slavonian oak casks. Aged an additional 6-8 months in bottle before release.
